Project kickoff template
Goals, scope, roles, risks and milestones agreed in the first meeting of a project.
What it is
A project kickoff is the first meeting of a project, where the team agrees on why the project exists and how it will run. This board has frames for goals, scope, roles, risks and milestones. Out of scope matters as much as In scope, because it settles arguments before they start.
When to use it
- On day one of a new project or a new client engagement
- When a project changes hands and the new team needs the basics
- To restart a project that has drifted away from its goal
How to run it
- 01
Agree on goals
Write two or three outcomes you can check at the end, like "Cut billing tickets by half".
- 02
Draw the scope line
Fill In scope and Out of scope together. If the room can't agree on an item, park it in Out of scope for now.
- 03
Name roles and risks
Write one name per role. List the risks you already know about and who keeps an eye on each.
- 04
Set milestones
Add three to five dates. After the meeting, send the board link to everyone with a stake in the project.
