RACI matrix template
Who is responsible, accountable, consulted and informed for each piece of work.
What it is
A RACI matrix shows who plays which part in each piece of work. Every task gets a letter per person or team. R is responsible, the people who do the work. A is accountable, the one person who owns the result and signs it off. C is consulted, asked for input before the work is done. I is informed, told about progress and decisions.
When to use it
- At a project kickoff, before the work starts
- When two teams each think the other one owns a task
- When decisions stall because too many people want a say
How to run it
- 01
List tasks and roles
Write the tasks down the side and the people or teams across the top.
- 02
Give every task one A
Exactly one person or team is accountable for each task. If two people share the A, nobody really has it.
- 03
Fill in R, C and I
Add who does the work, who gives input and who only needs to know. Keep the Cs few, since each one adds a review.
- 04
Read down the columns
A column full of Rs belongs to someone with too much work. A column with no letters may not need to be on the project.
