Strategy
SWOT analysis template
Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in a two-by-two you fill as a team.
What it is
A SWOT analysis sorts what you know about a business, product or plan into four boxes: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The first two are about you. The last two come from outside.
When to use it
- Before a strategy offsite or yearly planning
- When you size up a new market or a competitor
- To prepare for a funding or partnership conversation
How to run it
- 01
Agree on the subject
Write what you are analysing in the title. One product or one plan works better than the whole company at once.
- 02
Fill the boxes in silence
Everyone adds notes to all four frames for ten minutes before anyone talks.
- 03
Make every note specific
Rewrite vague notes like "good team" into facts like "two engineers who built the old system".
- 04
Turn it into actions
Pair strengths with opportunities and weaknesses with threats, and write one action for each pair.
