Planning
Sprint planning template
Sprint goal, capacity, candidate stories and the committed list on one board.
What it is
Sprint planning is the Scrum meeting at the start of a sprint. The team sets a sprint goal, works out how much time it has and picks the backlog items it can finish. This board covers that in four frames, from the goal to the list the team commits to.
When to use it
- On the first day of every sprint
- When sprints keep ending with half the work unfinished
- For a team moving from a loose to-do list to fixed iterations
How to run it
- 01
Write the sprint goal
One sentence that says what will be true at the end, like "Customers can export reports as CSV".
- 02
Work out capacity
Note who is away and how many working days the team has. Turn that into a rough number of points or tasks.
- 03
List the candidates
Pull the top backlog items into Candidates with their estimates. Split anything too big to finish in one sprint.
- 04
Commit
Move items into Committed until you reach capacity. The rest waits for the next sprint.
