What it is

The lean canvas is a one-page business model in nine boxes, adapted by Ash Maurya from the Business Model Canvas. It starts from the problem and the customer, which suits ideas that are still new.

When to use it

  • When you test a startup or side-project idea
  • To compare two versions of the same idea side by side
  • To give a co-founder or an investor a one-page summary

How to run it

  1. 01

    Start with problem and customer

Fill Problem and Customer segments first. Every other box depends on them.

  2. 02

    Write the unique value

One sentence that says why a customer would pick you, in words they would use.

  3. 03

    Fill the rest quickly

Solution, channels, revenue, costs, metrics and unfair advantage. Leave a box empty rather than guessing.

  4. 04

    Mark your riskiest assumption

Colour the note you are least sure about and plan a test for it this week.
