What it is

The business model canvas, created by Alexander Osterwalder, describes a business on one page in nine blocks. The right side covers customers, the value you offer them, how you reach them and how they pay. The left side covers the partners, activities, resources and costs it takes to deliver that.

When to use it

  • To explain an existing business to a new team or an investor
  • When you plan a new product line or a new source of revenue
  • To compare how two competitors make money

How to run it

  1. 01

    Start with customers and value

Fill Customer segments and Value propositions first. Every other block depends on them.

  2. 02

    Work from right to left

Add channels, customer relationships and revenue streams. Then add the activities, resources and partners behind them.

  3. 03

    Finish with costs

List the biggest costs and check that the revenue can cover them.

  4. 04

    Mark your guesses

Colour the notes that are assumptions and pick one to test first.
