User flow template
The screens and decisions a user passes through to finish one task.
What it is
A user flow maps the screens a user sees and the choices they make to finish one task, like signing up or checking out. Boxes are screens or steps, diamonds are decisions and arrows show where each answer leads.
When to use it
- Before you design screens, to agree on the steps
- When a sign-up or checkout loses people and you want to see every path
- To hand a feature from design to development with the error cases visible
How to run it
- 01
Pick one task
Name the goal, like "Sign up and open a first board", and the screen where the user starts.
- 02
Draw the main path
Add each screen in order, from the entry point to the moment the task is done.
- 03
Add decisions and errors
Put a diamond at every check, like "Email valid?", and draw where each answer goes.
- 04
Count the steps
Look for screens you could merge or skip. Every extra step is a place where someone can give up.
