Decision tree template
A chain of yes/no questions that leads to a clear outcome for each case.
What it is
A decision tree turns a choice into a chain of yes or no questions. Each answer leads to the next question or to an outcome, so anyone who follows it gets the same result for the same case.
When to use it
- To write down a policy, like refunds, discounts or escalations
- When support agents give different answers to the same request
- To think through a big decision one factor at a time
How to run it
- 01
Name the starting point
Write the situation that triggers the decision, like "Customer asks for refund".
- 02
Ask one question per diamond
Put first the question that rules out the most cases.
- 03
Label every branch
Each arrow leaving a question gets a Yes or a No, and every path ends in a clear outcome.
- 04
Test it with real cases
Run five recent cases through the tree. If one doesn't fit, you are missing a question.
