Miro free plan limits: 3 boards per team, and what happens next

By T. Krause

Miro's free plan stops at 3 editable boards per team, not per person. Here is what Free includes, what happens when you hit the cap, what Starter costs and which alternatives exist, all checked against Miro's own pages.

As of October 2026, Miro's free plan gives a team 3 editable boards. The limit belongs to the team, so five people in one free team share those 3 boards between them. Once the team has 3, Miro won't let anyone create a fourth until somebody deletes a board or the team upgrades. Members cost nothing and there's no cap on how many you invite. AI comes as a small monthly allowance.

Every Miro detail below comes from Miro's pricing page and its help centre, which I read on 23 October 2026. If I couldn't confirm something on Miro's own pages, I left it out. We make Prompt Board, a whiteboard that competes with Miro, so weigh the last sections with that in mind.

What the free plan includes

Miro describes Free as the plan "for small teams just getting started", and the basics are generous. You can invite as many people as you like, and none of them costs anything. Each of your 3 boards gets diagrams, tables, timelines, kanban, docs and slides, which the pricing page lists on every plan. Free teams can also use the template library, which Miro puts at more than 7,000 Miro and community-made templates, and the 250+ apps in its integrations list.

The catches are in sharing. Every board in a free team is visible to the whole team, and Free has no private boards. Anyone you invite to a board by email joins your team and can then see all of its boards. People outside the team can only look. Visitors on a public link can view, but commenting and editing by visitors start on Starter, and Free has no guest role.

Free also leaves out voting, the timer, private mode, custom templates, board version history, manual backup, video chat and the Jira and Asana cards. All of those start on Starter.

AI on the free plan

Miro's own pages disagree on the number. The pricing page FAQ says Free comes with 10 credits a month and calls AI on Free a limited trial. The help centre article on AI credits lists 25 credits a month for Free, reset on the first day of each calendar month. Either way the credits belong to the whole team rather than to each person, unused ones don't roll over, and a free team can't buy more.

Credits run out at different speeds depending on what you ask for. The help centre lists 2 credits for a doc and 5 credits per screen for a prototype. Free also gets limited access to Sidekicks, Miro's AI agents, and 5 Flow runs per team member.

What happens when you hit the 3-board limit

The count covers every board in the team. If four people each make one board, the fourth person is the one who gets stopped. Miro's help centre says that once a free team has 3 boards, trying to create another one gives an error, and nobody can create a board until the team deletes one or upgrades.

A team can still end up with more than 3 boards, for example after downgrading from a paid plan or if it had them before the limit applied. Then only the 3 most recently created boards stay editable, and Miro locks the rest in view-only mode. You can't choose which 3. Miro always keeps the newest ones active, so the roadmap you edit every week can end up locked while last Tuesday's test board stays editable.

Private boards from a paid plan get locked too after a downgrade, because Free doesn't support private boards. Sharing one with the team unlocks it, as long as it falls inside the 3-board limit.

To unlock a board, Miro's help centre gives three routes. Delete other boards, duplicate the locked board, or upgrade the team.

How to stay within 3 boards

If you'd rather stay on Free, the work is mostly housekeeping.

  1. Export before you delete. Free exports are low resolution. That's enough as a record of a retro, less so for a large diagram you want to print. Save the export where the team can find it, then delete the board to free a slot.
  2. Deleting isn't instantly final. Miro's help centre says a board's owner can restore a deleted board within 30 days.
  3. Reuse boards instead of starting new ones. A team that runs a retro every fortnight can keep one retro board and add a new frame each time, rather than spending a slot per sprint.
  4. Agree which 3 boards matter. The limit is shared, so one person's scratch board takes a slot from everyone else.

When paying for Miro makes sense

Starter costs $8 per member a month, billed yearly. Business costs $20 per member a month, billed yearly. Enterprise has custom pricing from 30 members. Miro says yearly billing saves 20% over monthly billing. On Starter and Business every member is a paid seat, so a team of six pays for six seats.

Paying makes sense when the board count is what's stopping you and the team will use the rest of Starter. That means private boards, visitors who can edit, voting and the timer, high-resolution export, version history and 25 AI credits per member a month. If you want Jira or Asana cards on the board, that points to Starter as well. Business has a 14-day free trial, which Miro suggests as the way to try its full AI workflows, Flows and Sidekicks included.

If you open a whiteboard a few times a month for a retro or a quick flowchart, paying per seat for that is a lot. A free tool with a different limit may suit you better.

Alternatives when 3 boards isn't enough

Other free whiteboards set their own caps, and several of them also count boards. Our roundup of Miro alternatives covers six of them, with the free-plan limits each vendor publishes and where Miro is still ahead.

Prompt Board

Prompt Board is ours, so here is what its free plan does and doesn't do, taken from the product's own limits.

  • There's no limit on the number of boards, and every board stays editable.
  • One board holds up to 5,000 objects, of which up to 300 can be images. A board that reaches 5,000 tells you it's full, and you delete objects to add more.
  • The AI drafts a board from one sentence, up to 20 generations per person per day, counted in UTC. Drafting a board, clustering stickies and summarising each count as one.
  • Export covers PNG and SVG, for the whole board or a selection. There's no PDF or CSV export.
  • Share links carry a view or edit role, and people who only view need no account.
  • You get 51 templates, and you can save any board as your own template.
  • Each person can upload up to 200 images a day.

The gaps matter just as much. There's no voting, no timer, no integrations, no native apps and no single sign-on. There's no Miro import either, though you can upload a Miro export as an image and work on top of it. Paid plans aren't on sale yet, and we've promised to email every account holder before the free plan changes.

Frequently asked questions

How many boards can you have on Miro's free plan?

Three editable boards per team. The limit covers the whole team, not each member. Boards beyond the 3 most recently created, for example after a downgrade, stay locked in view-only mode.

What happens to my Miro boards if I go over the free limit?

You can't create a new board until the team deletes one or upgrades. If the team already has more than 3, for example after leaving a paid plan, Miro keeps the 3 newest boards editable and locks the rest in view-only mode. You can still open and view the locked ones.

Can I choose which boards stay active on Miro Free?

No. Miro's help centre says the active boards are always the 3 most recently created. To edit an older one, delete a newer board, duplicate the locked one or upgrade.

Does Miro's free plan include AI?

Yes, as a small allowance shared by the team. The pricing page says 10 credits a month and the help centre says 25, reset on the first of each month. Credits don't roll over, and free teams can't buy extra.

How much does Miro cost after the free plan?

Starter is $8 per member a month and Business is $20 per member a month, both billed yearly. Enterprise has custom pricing from 30 members.

Is there an online whiteboard with no board limit on the free plan?

Prompt Board's free plan has no cap on the number of boards. It does cap each board at 5,000 objects and AI at 20 generations per person per day, and it has far fewer templates and integrations than Miro.
